There are three suitable methods presented in the paper: a) non-linear analyses including the effect ofgeometric imperfections and nonlinearities; the results are real stability limits, b) classical (linear) analyses; the results are ideal stability limits which must be reduced by coefficients reflecting the differences between the ideal and real stability limits, c) linear calculation of static nominal stress; comparisons of these values with proper code allowable stress determine the real stability limits. Applications of these methods are illustrated by alternative solutions of a cylindrical vessel loaded by external pressure
