Mandrel coldworking: computation of residual stresses and fatigue crack growth retardation
Materna A., Oliva V., Michlík P.
pages 168 - +8p, full text

Residual compressive stresses emanating from cold worked hole were determined using an elastic-plastic axisymmetric contact FEM analysis. The zone of the highest stresses was found near the exit side of the hole. The growth of a small corner fatigue crack at the entry edge of the hole under random loading with a typical aircraft spectrum was simulated using the program AFGROW. The crack practically did not propagate during the entire service life. The result was in good agreement with experiments.
