The paper deals with stability conditions of milling machine tools. As instability a self-excited vibration development, called chatter, under certain cutting conditions is meant. The unstable machining is unacceptable because of a low surface quality, high noise and a possibility of tool and spindle damage. A designer of machine tool uses stiffness and damping to avoid the instability. Technologist and programmer can use stability diagrams to choose proper stable spindle speed.
