Certain numerical methods are direct impact of classical variational principles. The finite element method is a typical example of such approaches. Some problems, particularly moving boundary problems, optimal shape design, or optimal control could prefer the boundary element method. In the paper variational problems leading to the use of boundary elements are formulated. The aim of optimizations are optimal shapes of fibres in composite structures under different conditions. The described principles should serve as a starting point for this.
