Flow in a square sectioned 90 deg elbow with extremely small radius of curvature is analysed. Turbulent flow simulations with realizable k-el are performed and compared with PIV data. Static pressures along the channel walls are investigated to study the effect of elbow. It is concluded that elbow behaves as a throttling element which causes transformation of kinetic and pressure energy and vice versa. From comparisons of computed and measured velocity fields it can be summarized that realizable k - el together with non-equillibrium wall functions over-predicts secondary velocity components and under-predicts swirl diffusion.
