The aim of this study was to compare the approximate finite element model of acoustic spaces corresponding to the human adult male vocal tract and nasal cavity with the influence of the cleft palate to the clinical observations. The FE models for Czech vowels "A" and "I" were analysed for increasing size of a cleft by using modal analysis of the FE models. The experimental verification was performed by normal subjects (continual changes of opening of the soft palate and nasalization of vowels following nasal consonant) and patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency. The results of numerical solutions are in a reasonable agreement with clinical observations.
