The paper deals with application of selected criteria of ductile fracture to prediction of material damage during the production of bolts by cold forming. Two basic steps of this procedure are described. First, the fracture criteria parameters are identified by numerical simulation of realized material fracture tests in compression. Second, two main stages of the bolt production (forward extrusion of shaft and compression of head) are computationally simulated as a large displacement, elasto-plastic problem. The computed history of stress and strain is then used for evaluation of the fracture criteria and compared with the identified limit fracture values of the material. A number of geometrical versions are analysed to evaluate the influence of shape on the probability of fracture.
