Principles of the current theories of the hole drilling method for evaluation of the residual stress were tested by the beams in bending. It was shown that considerable differences exist between the stress state estimated by the hole-drilling method and real stress state. 3D numerical models of the beams in bending and tension were created and the hole-drilling method was modelled. It was shown that the basic base function used in the current theory for definition of the radial strain around the drilled hole, is not able to describe the distribution of the stress accurately. Therefore new basis functions were suggested and tested. Using the new basic functions and new method for estimation of the residual stresses were defined and verified.
