Magneto-sensitive (MS) elastomers are a class of smart materials whose mechanical properties are changed instantly and reversibly by the application of an external magnetic field. These smart materials typically consist of micron-sized ferrous particles dispersed in a hyperelastic elastomer matrix (such as rubber, silicon rubber, etc.). The equations of the mechanical equilibrium and Maxwell’s equations in an applied stationary magnetic field are summarized and constitutive equations describing the behavior of MS elastomer and a strain-energy function for isotropic MS elastomers are presented. FEM simulations are presented to illustrate the response of the magnetoelastic material to simultaneous application of the magnetic field and the mechanical loading.
