Presented article deals with dynamic response of a footbridge equipped with tuned mass dampers (TMD) on vertical harmonic excitation. The installation of absorbers against undesired vibrations significantly changes the damping distribution on such type of structures. Commonly used presumption of proportional damping in mathematical models is sufficient, especially for approximative assessments of pedestrian discomfort. However taking the nonproportional damping into account results in more accurate solution of response. The differences in solution methods and in results for both types of damping are presented.
