The paper presents the results of a performance analysis of the new sparse direct solver and the existing frontal solver of the in-house finite element system PMD, which has been carried out on a set of finite element problems from real engineering applications. The sparse direct solver has been designed to efficiently solve large finite element problems (106 to 107 equations) to overcome limitations of the frontal solution method. Some modifications to existing numerical methods for storage, ordering and solution of linear equation systems have been implemented in the sparse direct solver to enhance its effectiveness, and are also briefly mentioned in the paper.
