This paper presents a portion of the work focused on the development of innovative, lightweight composite materials with the prospect of constructing modern ballistic shields. The aim of the study was to determine the reinforcement of the ballistic resistant materials by the introduction of Al 2O3 particles in the aluminum alloy matrix. Tests were performed on composites prepared by compression in a liquid-state based on an alloy of AC-44200 with the addition of Al2O3 particles. Produced materials were tested on the ballistic test field, subjecting them to shots of 5.56 mm by a Beryl rifle, Polish production. Damaged materials were subjected to metallographic analysis and identification of the destruction process. From the presented analysis and test results, we can conclude that tested materials with the participation of interpenetrating phases: plastic (matrix) and fragile (reinforcement) can be an attractive alternative to currently used materials.
